Speed Study Results: Rural Municipality of Bedeque and Area

In order to address the Rural Municipality of Bedeque and Area concerns surrounding continious speeding issues within our Municipal boundaries, the Department of Transportation conducted a Speed Study on Linkletter Avenue between June 5th and June 6th, 2025, and recorded 2981 speed readings. Full details of this Speed Study were received on September 18th, 2025.

In all cases, the values that were recorded are within the acceptable guidelines as set forth by the Transportation Association of Canada (TAC); therefore, the department would
not recommend any further action be taken at this location.

The following Speed Study Results were addressed to the Rural Municipality of Bedeque and Area by e-mail:

Good afternoon Kevin.

Hope all is well.

We are e-mailing to inform you of the speed study results that was recently conducted on Linkletter Avenue in Central Bedeque. The speed radar station was set up on the north-east corner of the Bedeque Baptist Church property, Civic No. 54.  There were 2981 speed reading taken between 5 and 6 June 2025.

As a synopsis, we review the actual speeds of vehicles traveling in both directions and compare these to the posted speed limit (in this case, 50 km/h). We look at the following parameters:

Please Note
NB = North Bound Traffic
SB = South Bound Traffic

Mean Speed - This is the average speed that vehicles are traveling. It is acceptable for the Mean Speed to exceed the Posted Speed by a range of 2 to 13 km/h.
NB: 58.9 km/h – SB: 58.7 km/h

85th Percentile Speed - This is the speed that 85% of the vehicles do not exceed and is an indication of what most motorists perceive to be a reasonable or safe speed based on the road and surrounding conditions. The 85th Percentile Speed is often a starting point for determining the appropriate speed for a road, but it is considered acceptable for the 85th Percentile Speed to exceed the Mean Speed by a range of 6 to 11 km/h.
NB: 68 km/h – SB:69 km/h

15 km/h Pace - This is the 15 km/h speed range that most of the vehicles are traveling within, with the upper bound typically close to the 85th Percentile Speed.
NB: 68 to 54 km/h – SB: 65 to 51 km/h

Vehicles in Pace -  This is the percentage of vehicles that were traveling within the 15 km/h Pace. Good consistency in travel speeds is evident when 60 to 70 percent of vehicles are within the 15 km/h Pace
NB: 63.8% - SB: 59.5%

Modal Speed -   This is the individual speed that has the highest occurrence.
NB: 59 km/h – SB: 61 km/h

Median Speed -  This is the 50th Percentile and is the speed at which half the vehicles are traveling below, and half are traveling above.
Both Directions – 59 km/h

In all cases, the values that were recorded are within the acceptable guidelines as set forth by the Transportation Association of Canada (TAC); therefore, the department would not recommend any further action be taken at this location.

We trust that this alleviates your concerns at that this is acceptable to you. Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions or concerns.

Thank you.

Best Regards;

Darrell
